Our Sport and Movement

“The Heart of the Waldorf Method is the conviction that education is an art - it must speak to the child's experience.” Rudolf Steiner

Sports Programme

At Raphaeli Waldorf School, we believe that movement and sports are integral to a well-rounded education. In partnership with Plett Sports Clinic, we have introduced a dynamic and scientifically informed sports program for 2025, designed to foster the holistic development of each child. This enhanced curriculum emphasizes physical activity, teamwork, and healthy competition, ensuring that every learner experiences the joy and benefits of movement.

At our school, movement is woven into the very fabric of our educational approach. During school hours, our curriculum naturally integrates rhythm and motion, helping children embody wisdom through active learning, games and eurythmy. Our sports program builds upon this foundation, offering more traditional sporting activities.

For Classes 4 to 7: Two one-hour sports lessons per week
Our sports program places a strong emphasis on developing specific skills in the sports focus of the term. These sessions include team practices, game strategies, and opportunities for inter-school competitions. Through this, learners can deepen their understanding of the sport while building teamwork and resilience.

For Kindergarten and Class 1: One one-hour movement, games, and ball skills lesson per week

The focus for our youngest learners is on developing foundational movement skills, including: Ball skills to build hand-eye coordination; balance and core stability activities; imaginative movement One one-hour movement, games, and ball skills lesson per week games to inspire creativity; basic teamwork and turn-taking exercises.

Sports Attire
To ensure comfort and safety, learners must wear the designated school sports uniform on their sports days: a school T-shirt, shorts, school hat or cap, and trainers (tekkies) with socks. This attire promotes ease of movement and a sense of collective identity.

We warmly invite parents to get involved in this journey. Join us for inter-school events to cheer on the learners, volunteer to assist with logistics during sports days, or participate in discussions about how we can continue to improve and grow the program. Your involvement is invaluable in fostering a sense of community and encouraging a positive sporting culture.

True to Waldorf principles, we emphasize sportsmanship and skill development over competition. Our approach nurtures physical abilities, teamwork, respect and personal growth. Through these sporting activities, students have the opportunity to explore various sports in an environment that celebrates effort, cooperation and individual progress. We believe this balanced approach not only enhances physical well-being but also contributes to the holistic development of each child.

Eurythmy

What is Eurythmy?

It is an art form which uses specific gestures to reveal specific sounds — be they spoken or played on an instrument. By incorporating these into choreographed movement sequences, a poem or piece of music can, quite literally, be ‘seen’ in a unique and authentic way. Working in close co-operation with the class teacher, the school Eurythmist can enhance the experience of the Primary School Main Lesson, or the seasonal theme in the Kindergarten. Eurythmy strengthens co-ordination and encourages the ability to listen with sensitivity. When children experience themselves in movement and have to keep a clear relationship in space with one another, a finer social awareness develops.
